World Doll Day

Join the Westport Historical Society, Kansas City Public Library, and the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures for a fun-filled day celebrating the unique joy of doll collecting!

Saturday, June 11: Schedule of Events

1 PM | Check-in 

Meet & greet local doll collectors, representatives from museums and sponsors, artists, and doll enthusiasts to learn more about their impact in the community.

1:30 PM | Keynote Speaker 

Listen to Lenexa author Elizabeth Bunce, who just released her third book about 12-year-old amateur sleuth Myrtle Hardcastle. Cold-Blooded Myrtle is set in Victorian England during a period of great forensic innovation, including fingerprinting and other crime-solving techniques. Limited-edition Myrtle dolls will be on view to help bring the main character to life for fans.

2:15 – 3:30 PM | Intermission & Doll Exchange

Through the generous support of the Doll Cradle, the United Federation of Doll Club, Inc., local doll collectors, and the Kansas City Chiefs, 250 free dolls will be available as a gift in celebration of Kansas City’s first “World Doll Day” extravaganza. Select bags with a male doll or stuffed animal will also be available.

Due to limited availability, it is strongly recommended to RSVP in advance for a ticket to exchange for a free doll. If you do not want a free doll but would like to enjoy the lectures and programs, you need not register. Some tickets for free dolls may be available for walk-ins.

Be sure to stop by the selfie-station to get a photo with your new friend!

3:30 PM | Featured lecture “Harriet’s Doll”

Hear from Dr. Madeline Rislow, Sr. Manager of Learning & Engagement at The National Museum of Toys and Miniatures and gain insight history of fashion dolls in the Gilded Age through the unique story of one little girl from Kansas.

4:00 PM | Doll Collecting 101

Doll collecting is for everyone! Learn more tips and tricks to grow and care for your how to care for your new friends with help from Connie Harrell, owner of the Doll Cradle Doll Shop.

There is no need to get “dolled” up, but advance registration is recommended to reserve your free doll. RSVP online at at kclibrary.org
